El Camino de Santiago (the Way of St James) is a network of ancient pilgrim routes across Europe that lead to the city of Santiago de Compostela in Northwest Spain. The pilgrim's final destination however, is the Cathedral in Santiago, where it is believed the remains of the Apostle St James are interred below the High Altar.
The earliest recorded pilgrim visits to the Shrine of St James date from the 8th Century. Pilgrim numbers reached their peak in the Middle Ages, then declined after the Black Plague and the Protestant Revolution. Current records show that since 1980, pilgrim numbers have been increasing and it is now accepted that this pilgrimage is enjoying a modern day revival.
The route was declared the First European Cultural Route in 1987 and inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993.
Stephen and Michelle Stigwood are from Brisbane, Australia. They love travel and have visited Spain 3 times. While they are regular suburban walkers back home, the Camino was their first long distance walk. They returned from walking the Camino Frances in late October 2009.

The workshop will give tips for preparation, packing and walking the Camino. It will provide an update on the Camino Frances (the most popular camino route) and hopefully encourage people to begin planning their own camino journey. Michelle & Stephen will have their equipment and clothing on display and there will be an opportunity for a "pack and carry" trial of recommended weight. A booklet & nibbles will be provided.
